ALL WAR ISSUE THREE ALL WAR ANNE COLWELL Trees attacked by caterpillars release a scent to bring wasps that sting the things to death and devour them. They call for air support like the allies in the World War II movies I grew up watching on summer Saturdays. The platoon about to be overrun looks up to the buzzing skies and cheers. Do you see how it's war? How the yellow swallowtail sometimes mimics the poisonous pipevine because it's best never to be defenseless, to pretend, at least, that there's a gun in your pocket or a knife, to make a show because disguise and deception win and women in Fiji promised hotel jobs in Dubai are cutting hair on American military bases in Iraq and you've always known it was like that, haven't you? That it's all war; war's truth and truth's a kaleidoscope from a cereal box, a cheap paper tube where you look at plastic triangles of red and blue and yellow that shift but never change like butterflies in and out of the shade on a June day. 35 | ARDOR
