POETRY TOUPIN CONSENT JAMES TOUPIN What was left to her, as herself, Was the ability to refuse. Reminded it was time for bed, Having acknowledged the reminder, She sat eyes straight and body limp, The hour's conscientious objector, As though overstaying bedtime Were the last of an adult's freedom, As it was the first of a child's. I learned to wrap her in an embrace And, rising, stand her up with me, Love's gesture a stratagem To overwhelm all she wanted With what we knew to be good for her. The first day at the nursing home, Though, music prompted her to move. ARDOR | 24
