POETRY VOGEL I SAW FIFTY ROBINS MARK VOGEL in an open pasture outside Motel Six in Cadiz, Kentucky where cows grazed as mottled black statues dotting uniform lime-green flat stretching forever to the river. Released from my sterile room I couldn't help but face west away from mulched landscaping, white-painted signs, frilly accoutrements, the asphalt built to carry away. In these March mornings crafted fresh, each moment distinct, the quiet blankets, fills a thin blue milky edged sky over the lingering last frost white perfect on uniform green. When fifty immigrants from southern warmth hop and pull, deliberately waking ground from spare winter weakened, they know before me how innocent air fills with cows and clouds ARDOR | 14
