NORMAL by NANCY DOBSON Our old selves return to us. Breathing slows speech patterns dull and dip like moths in low light and a yawn escapes the confines of your ribcage. With any luck neither of us will say the wrong thing before sleep comes and we drift into separate places. In the morning I wake beckoned from wavy dreams, rain on our window coming closer until it drums my skull fusing my body with wet wires. In peaceful sleep you lie, a lily on a grave. I want to count each fine hair on your throat one vein pulsing as your breath bright but fragile like stained glass layers into the air. You stir your hand brushing my thigh a sparrow on the windowsill bringing me a kernel or a golden seed a singular reason to hope.
